How Do You Check Your Transmission Fluid?
Always refer to your owner's manual to learn whether or not your car should be running when you check your transmission fluid.
Open the hood and find the transmission fluid dipstick (make sure not to confuse it with your motor oil dipstick). Wipe it with a clean rag, and check your fluid level.
If your fluid is coming up to the full line, just replace the dipstick and shut the hood.
If you are running low on transmission fluid in Selbyville or Georgetown, pour in more until it comes up to the fill line. If your fluid is low and you believe that you have a leak, give us a call at 302-360-8305 so we can take a look at possible problems and take care of them before they become more expensive.
What Does a Car's Transmission Do?
Not everyone is a car expert—and luckily, you don’t have to be to drive one! So if you're not totally sure what a transmission is or what it does, you're definitely not alone.
Basically, your transmission is what shifts your car into the right gear so it runs smoothly at any speed. When you speed up, it shifts into a higher gear. When you slow down, it drops to a lower one. You can think of it like shifting gears on a bike—just way more automatic (unless you’re driving a manual).
Most cars in the U.S. are automatic (only about 4% are manual), which means the car handles all the gear changes for you—no clutch pedal or stick shift required.
When Should You Change Your Transmission Fluid?
Transmission fluid keeps everything running smoothly and prevents your transmission from overheating. That’s why it’s important to make sure your fluid levels are where they should be.
Some manufacturers recommend changing it every 30,000 miles, while others say you can wait until 100,000 miles. Your best bet? Check your owner’s manual for the exact schedule. It’s also a good idea to check the fluid regularly—either yourself or by swinging by i.g. Burton Lewes Automall Chevrolet. We’re just a short drive from Milton, Camden, and Dewey Beach, and we’re happy to help with a quick fluid check.
